    bit torrent downloads

Hi There, not sure if I am doing is against forum rules, if so, would a mod delete this topic and accept my apologies in advance.

I know a lot of you use p2p software to get your latest TV shows and other p2p goodies, I was wondering if there was maybe a way we can band together and joint download torrents, I'd reckon this would be a very good method to get a large download in minimal time.

I guess if you are one of those leechers that just throttles your upload to 3-5kB/s and then stops your torrent once you have completed, you don't need to reply to this as I always try to give back 1:1 ratio or more to the p2p community

Any ideas on how we can get this done?

I can imagine a group of only 5+ on HKBB network gang banging a 100gig torrent, with 5 connections from different users downloading from different seeders/peers, then finally grabbing information from each other...

Unfortunately Bittorrent does not consider the network distance and capacities between you and other peers and generally found that what you are trying to do does not work.

The optimal design would be for Bittorrent by default try to talk to PC which are on the same ISP as you, or are on ISPs which are close by.
The task of working out the optimal peers is quite and interesting thing to play with if you care to discuss. Though I found that someone was working on making Bittorrent BGP aware.

Another thing you could do is run your own private tracker and distribute privately. Then you could ensure maximum performance.

Also worth checking if you can have a tracker which proxies requests and aggregates them. If those exist, ISPs should run them to save bandwidth.

Downloading from your nearest peers has got the security issue that the police/customs would find it easy to catch every single illegal down loader in HK.

    There's P4P but it's usually considered a bad idea,

Another problem is that TCP does not scale well on very long distances, no resolution has been found to the problem to date. Many universities have created bespoke protocols on top of UDP for high speed transfers instead.

Yes that P4P seems pretty flawed.

My idea is have the clients learn and figure out what are the fastest network and closes peers it can talk to and feed to a central system. The core then processed and redistrubuted via bit torrent with the optiomal routing peers, per AS. So each user based on the ISP they are on would have a differrent view of what peers to prefer. It would be a table similar to a BGP routing table, and only contain the peers which are near.

This method would not require any ISPs involvement and would end up saving the ISP the bandwidth.

perhaps run a local DC hub then?
Set a share limit for anyone who wants to enter, and invite only.
And then arrange so different users dload different shows and ep's etc.
