    Help - with excel!

I have lost a lot of data I was entering into excel today - i was saving by using the save icon every 10 minutes or so and then I closed the file. When I went and reopened the file a few hours later it was the original version at the start of the day!!!

I have no idea what went wrong!!! Anyone have a similar experience?

It is saved somewhere, you just have to find out where.

Was it opened from an email?
    Or a new file?

In Excel, when you go, "File" and it shows you the last 5 (or so files that were used in Excel), is it there in the list?

You could go in to Explorer or My Computer and do a search for the file name. It is possible it is saved somewhere you just didn't realise it.

Presumably not on Windows 7 though?

When saving backups you need to save to multiple files in order to prevent this exact situation from occurring. Excel can already be set to save every 5 minutes.

Using Windows Explorer, go to the top of your C Drive and search for all *.xls / *.xlsx files on your PC.
Then, sort by modified date. You should find your file.

I have never had that experience before! Did you try re-opening the file from the Start button -> Documents, this will show you the latest documents you were working on.

Think carefully about the suggestions above BEFORE you do anything!

If you start opening files too often, or reopen it from the original email (if this was the, very common!, problem) then you will overwrite your saved file. So look for it on the hard drive BEFORE you open anything!

The open from an email and save is so common it's not funny.

If you are using excel 2007 then it's almost obligatory to have this problem because the "save as" command is so well hidden.

I had this experience in the past with pre 97 versions of excel.

Look in the Temp directory, where excel dumps its temporary files. Copy the ffiles you created around that time. Rename them, try opening them.

If you still can't open it.
Get a program to view the data in the spreadsheet and find out it is the right file.... then get some software to repair excel spreadsheets.

Thank you All! I know what I did wrong. I pushed the Edit button I don't know why, and I should have created a new name for this data group. Anyway, it is gone and I had to re-do eight hours work. Serves me right, next time I will be more carefull
    Thanks again!!!
