    rss reader of choice.

I mostly do RSS on my phone and I'm thinking of using a PC particularly as I can keep much longer history.

    What do you guys recommend?

I want to have an RSS reader that allows me to:
    group feeds into categories
Have different update schedules for different categories.

It is very annoying each time I want a something updated I have to do the update manually, or if I do a scheduled update, it updates all feeds.

What other nice features have you guys found useful?

Any suggestions that don't involve me handing over more of my life story to Google?

Does that involve any information at all passing through Google's servers?

Don't know. Maybe a google search will have the answer.

I want a desktop based as I get real time notifications of updates. I don't want to waste time having got to a web page and wait for the pages to load. Time is money.

Plus putting anything on Google, is just dumb.

The NetNewsWire (Mac, iPhone, iPad) and FeedDemon (PC) group of RSS readers are pretty well-known and respected.

I'm not so sure about customized scheduling on the desktop, but you can select a certain subset of your feeds for the iPhone or other mobile device.

If you want to use the program on just one computer, you should be able to avoid Google. However, the syncing is done through Google Reader.

Here ya go: RSS Reader - Online News Reader - NewsGator
