How to cleaning registry files of a Win2000 laptop?

Hi, I inherited a used Dell laptop (4 years old). I cleaned up the harddrive, removed a lot of unwanted software, defragmented the HD and it is still really slow. Can someone walk me through the steps of cleaning up all the old registry info or recommend other ways to speed it up? I only want to run Firefox, Skype and some firewall and virus software. Thought of formatting the HD and reinstalling the software I want but thought there must be another way to give it a performance boost.

better to just do a reformat then edit the registry. it's much faster and easier as well. if you're not familiar with the registry, then it's better not to play around with it. not to mention, it won't make much of a difference anyway compared to a clean install.

Also worth upgrading the ram if you can as well.
