upfront payment around HK$2300, monthly HK$299 data plan with HK$60 monthly rebate.
I think you'd better to buy it here in HK and subscribe to a data plan. Bringing a nice smart phone over but without a data plan is of not much use!
Arrived in Hong Kong Saturday and went looking for the best plan for me today (bought my Desire in the UK and managed to get it unlocked from the operator over there), seems like the best plan for me is the one2free;
$279 for 500MB of data, unlimited intra SMS and more minutes than I could ever use, I am tempted by the cheaper $199 option which comes with much the same but only 250MB of data but I am not sure if that is enough, but I am pretty sure it's probably not, especially with the amount I will be using google maps in my first few months here!
M'y girlfriend got a 258 plan with 3, unlimited data and something like 500min maybe you should check 3

3 have an unlimited data plan for HK$210 a month, sim only.
Also SMV have one for HK$250 a month, again unlimited.
So there are cheaper options than 1010.
I actually ended up going with PCCW which was the only shop I didn't manage to get in yesterday.
$198 with more minutes and intra texts than I'll ever use, unlimited data and unlimited wi-fi (which I don't have to use on my phone so I'll use the wi-fi access for my iPad and the data for my phone).
Quite happy although I did have to pay a $1000 deposit which I'll get back once I have my HKID and $550 which I'll get back once I have my proof of address, although I'll probably transfer both to my account so I don't have to worry about paying a bill until next year.
EDIT: Forgot to factor in the £12 charge thing so it comes to $210 total which sounds like it is the same as 3. I was quite happy to go with PCCW as I have seen their wireless come up loads on my phone while exploring so am banking on it being useful for my iPad.
