Seeking mobile service while in HK for 2 weeks

I have a Treo 650, GSM, Quad-band. I would like to be able to make local calls and to be able to use the phone to check my e-mails and surf the Web. Also, I would like to be able to listen to streaming audio. Which plans/companies would be best?

I don't know about service for 2 weeks - you're only sensibly going to end up as a PAYG connection for that length of time, so what you need is one with a decently-priced GRPS service, which might not be easy to find.

As I may have mentioned here before, once or twice, I use Peoples with my Treo, which works pretty well, but streaming audio over dial-up-speed GRPS is on the limit of what it can handle. It's possible, but, particularly if I'm moving, the connection isn't quite reliable enough to sustain a 32kbit stream without dropouts.

Hey vmlinuz, you should be getting EDGE on Peoples right?

Well, yes, I should, but I don't think I am. I did a bit of research a while back, and it looked like they were only talking about EDGE for mobile TV, MMS type things, rather than for general data access - which is pretty annoying.

Particularly since it seems there's a reasonable chance I'll spend most of the next week without an internet connection in my new place, so I'll be relying on the GRPS... I just bought a new Bluetooth dongle, to replace a lost one, so I can get my laptop to talk to my phone.

I think I'll give Peoples a call, about now...

I'm on Peoples with my Atom and I get EDGE connections most of the time and I only surf the internet.

Seems I am doing EDGE... I called Peoples, they said that there was no configuration or setup needed - if you've got an EDGE-capable phone and GPRS access, you'll get EDGE.

To confirm, I'm currently connected over it, and it seems to peak at about 128kbit - not exactly high-speed broadband, but faster than dial-up and quite usable. It does seem to be faster running over bluetooth from my laptop than directly on the Treo though.

    [Edit: Ooh, post number 200]

Must be the Treo's cpu holding things back.
