    callerID overseas numbers

Hi, I have a basic callerID phone question. I have a Smartone mobile phone and whenever my family and friends call from overseas (mainly the U.S.), their numbers do not show up on callerID. I don't think it's their long distance carrier because each of them uses a variety of providers.

Is this normal for HK phones? Are their other mobile phone providers in HK that relay the callerID info?

It would be nice to know who is calling me before I pick up.

    Thanks.

I think it's as much to do with the network here and there. Some of my overseas friends' numbers don't show and some do. Try asking amongst your HK friends (on a different network to you) and maybe get your overseas friends to ring them at a fixed time then hang up.

Long d caller IDs never appear on my phone. however, i did get callerID on a SMS msg from the UK a LONG time ago.
i switched from sunday to 3 2 months ago and my bf can see my HK phone number (without area code too) in vancouver after i'm on 3, but i cant see if he's calling me on either network

We've definately seen overseas caller IDs on both our SmarTone and Three phones ... from the US and Germany for sure.

To supplement the above I use Peoples and I see numbers from '3' in France and BT landlines in the UK.

If the person calling you is using a GSM phone and using the default international call service of their GSM provider (i.e. they dial your number using +852 on the front) then you should pretty much always get CLI. If dialling from fixed lines, or using IDD dialaround or calling card services then the CLI is much less likely to make it end-to-end.

What you use for your IDD has no effect at all on whether you will see the CLI of people calling you - it is the service THEY are using that matters. Similarly your use of 1686 may stop them seeing your CLI when you call them.
