    Blackberry Monthly Sim Only Plans

I have an unlocked Blackberry 9700 and initially bought a PAYG 2G sim from '3' when arriving in HK. Now I wish to use some data and thought it would be best to sign up to a sim only contract. However when visiting a 3 Shop they showed me their Blackberry Monthly Plans which are extortionately expensive in comparison to other sim-only plans (e.g. £398 for unlimited email data plan). The guy said it was because Blackberrys used different data formats or something and that why it's expensive.

Am I being thrown a curve ball here?

Smartone is the same, if you want to use Blackberry you need to get a separate package, I have an unlimited data sim card from smartone and assumed it would work if I get a blackberry and just inserted it in, tried and failed, could only dial in and out, walked to the smartone shop across from the fortress that I bought the blackberry, they said need to buy different package, went back to fortress and exchanged the phone for a SII

3 is not throwing you a curve ball.

one2free offers a weekly, or month Blackberry Tariff on Pay as you go. Get a one2free sim card, costs 460HKD a month for BIS SERVICE... they are the ONLY carrier to offer NON CONTRACT BB BIS in HK.

    its either them or nothing...

If you're going to use your Blackberry just for emails, BBM and browsing, Facebook etc.. then you don't need unlimited data. Remember Blackberry's network compresses all the data traffic by at least 5 times, so if you'll upload a 5MB sized image on Facebook it'll only use 1MB from your data plan. You need Blackberry specific data plan and that's the reason a lot of service providers take Blackberry users for a ride.
