The real question is who is logging my texts?

That is true, but in the three years I have had it on Android, they have always extended the free trial. That is not to say that will change in the future.

I didn't even realise it was a subscription service

I suppose I'll just have to investigate financing options to cover the USD0.99 per year after the free period is up!

Never realised it was subscription on Android either. I've never paid a penny so far but I only use my Android phone in the UK. Hope I don't get a £0.69 surprise next time I'm back lol.

Was installing Whatsapp on my new phone. While it was doing the authorisation the screen said that you can try Whatsapp for free for a month and the its $8 after that a year.

Ya... It's free for everyone to update. There's nothing special about that.

So, I think, for Android anyway, Whatsapp are moving to a fully yearly subscription model. Yes, for the longest time they have kept on extending the free trial, but my most recent extension periods became shorter and shorter.

My free trial runs out mid Feb, and I would be very surprised if they extended it again. Also I note that the Android app has just been updated and one of the updates is the following: "adopt google play in-app purchase for service extension".
