that's not third party, it's licensed apple cable HK$198 is a premium for a single cable ( well, I have paid HK$800/GBP60 for cable but that for performance audiophile usage), belkin is 'approved' accessories supplier, with the chip inside the cable
nice little money spinner from apple, same with their limited usage, but premium priced lightning to hdmi, lightning to vga, lightning to ipod/iphone 30pin adaptor
At work I use an iphone 4 cable with a cheap adaptor I bought from wanchai and every time I connect I get a message - This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this phone.
I dismiss the message and the cable charges just fine.
are you using ios7?

I cannot stress enough how important it is to use the correct cable and adapters. I've seen so many cases where the user has used a dodgy cable and it's fried the USB port or the motherboard of a computer, esp some non branded China one.
Sent from my GT-N7105 using GeoClicks mobile app
for charging and data transfer, you have decent third party brands and licensed brands costing less than HK$100, rarely difference in performance, even hdmi, the only difference is shielding if short length, lucrative incentive for adding chips by a certain company
for audio, esp analog, big difference in performance, as you can hear the difference in quality
frying the usb is unlikely by third party cables, very very rare
what is important is quality chargers and portable battery packs, chances of these cheap no branded cheap chargers and portable battery packs, catching fire, frying your brains, killing your equipment is signifacantly higher, even reported cases of smoke and over heating portable batteries in hk, and deaths by electrocuting by cheap chargers in china
Do not use cheap Wanchai crap to charge you apple gear. My husband got one to replace a broken cable for our daughter's ipad 18 months ago. Never again.
A month after we got it she got a very nasty electric shock from it. When we pulled it from the wall it was too hot to touch with bare hands. Don't like to think what might happen to people that leave these things plugged in over night.
Honestly Jimbo, thats your choice, I've just told you what I've seen first hand on multiple occasions. Its not just with iPhone cables, I've had a mate's laptop fried as he used a cheap SSP cable to charge his Samsung smartphone. It's not like it costs a whole lot more.
Sure, its not as if it happens all the time, and statistically of it happening is low, I see around 3 cases of this per week, but it does happen.
