Yes make sure you do all your research beforehand so that you have a fair idea of the costs.

Also, if you are going to choose China Mobile, it might be an idea to check with a friend in your area who uses it, nothing worse than signing up to a 2 year contract only to find out that reception in your area / apartment sucks!

Coverage varies by area, generally Smartone are considered pretty good (I'm using them now). I've had bad experiences with 3 so would avoid them.

And for my personal phone I'd only use 3 as it covers more of where I am. In fact our work mobiles are currently PCCW which don't even work where we are so have been testing CSL and Smartone as well, have been a former user of both. CSL also has no coverage and Smartone just has service. Similar story at home.

For best service test yourself. Throw away SIM cards are cheap.

I'll mostly be around the central area and wider HK Island, as well as Ap Lei Chau and that area.

This has been done time and time again.

I reckon all the networks are about the same, they all have their weak areas and their strong areas.

Also, the mobile field is about to change soon. PCCW Mobile (probably the smallest) is going to takeover CSL (probably the biggest).

I pay approx HK$ 300 per month for shared SIM from Smartone. 1 primary SIM for voice and date and 2 additional SIMS for data. Very good service.
