Any way to stop the mobile phone contract for a few months and restart it again?

Hi there,

I'm new to Hong Kong and about to get a new mobile phone contract with one of the companies.
I have a plan to stay here for 8 months from now on and go abroad for another 8 months and then come back again and stay for 2 years.
Does anybody know how the ordinary mobile phone contract works in the above situation?
Do I have to keep paying during my leave?

When I was living in Japan, one of the companies did have a service where they maintain your mobile phone number and contract during your absence in Japan.
Does Hong Kong have such a service?

Only up to a certain time period if I recalled correctly while your contract will be extended.

You should discuss with them your exact situation before deciding which mobile company to go with.

Why not just go for a pay-as-you go (i.e. prepaid) service?

There are also I believe providers who offer month to month contracts.

Numbers are portable here so you could do a month to month contract and then revert to a prepaid (and not use it for 8 months) and then move your number back to whatever you want when you come back.
