    Oppo R7

Very nice phone, I have the previous model R5 and it's a very good piece of kit.

Thanks @jimbo, will look at that. I have looked at Oppo before but I think reason I decided against was the rootability. I do find the Chinese companies heavily customise their firmwares, so the only way I would go with them is if I know they have good custom rom support, which from my research I found Oppo was average on that front.

Anyway xiaomi mi4c is a no go for me. Lack of NFC basically. Also note it doesn't have fingerprint reader which seems to be standard in new release phones these days.

I have a Xiaomi, paid around 1K one and half year ago. At first they're ok phones, but they become crap pretty quickly. On mine GPS broke down very quickly, also when you type too fast it capitalize the first two characters. After a bit it becomes really slow, I dont have a day when the phone doesn't freeze it's really annoying. i'm not the type to buy a phone unless it's broken, but I will never get a Xiaomi, it's ok phone to get as a backup if you break a phone but that's about it.

Sounds like you have the Redmi v1, probably with 8GB storage, am I right?

This device is underpowered, I had one and you're right, performance does suck.

I wouldn't use the Redmi as an example of Xiaomi's best however

well, build quality is one issue

but for a HK$1500, snapdragon 400 and 1gb ram is designed for entry level/moderate users, ideal for older generation due it's slightly sluggish performance, add a facebook and a few other apps which constantly uses the cpu/memory and data, it ain't gonna be fast

however, it's the UI which i find really bad, no app tray, hide an app from your main screen, never find again unless you delete, and reinstall, pretty horrible

Everyone has that deal breaking spec they're looking for. i'm looking for the $2k android phone with NFC and OTG. Possibly Zenfone 2.

Like dthe idea of solving power problems on this one - two batteries! Under $2k on banggood this week.

    100x this!!

These china alternatives just do not have the build quality. The Mrs has a One Plus phone - cheap as shit build. Would not survive in my pocket or the number of times I drop my phone.

I refuse to spend money on adding protectors and all that crap to compensate for build quality.

I think you missus needs to get a active variant of a smart phone, rubberised construction, waterproof

These are the best rugged, most durable smartphones right now (2015 edition)

yeah that's the one. Even opening Whatsapp sometimes will freeze it. I found the app design is horrible too. They recently released a new version and they changed the entire thing, I couldnt find some of the settings because of that. So annoying
