    Apple Pay Japan - Suica

So, Apple Pay have just launched in Japan. Interesting thing is that is supports the Suica card, which (and I am sure people will) correct me if I am wrong, is very similar to the Octopus card in terms of the technology it uses. Something called FeliCa NFC, or something like that.

I am aware that Octopus has its own mobile nfc sim, but it only works with a narrow band of phones. Now only if Octopus got their sh*t together and worked with the likes of Apple, Samsung, Google, etc.

But then again, I'm sure most people will just say, why bother, we already have the Octopus card?

Interesting that apple have disabled Touch ID fingerprint authentication for the Suica wallet app, meaning you can pass through the station gates quickly without holding up the people behind you. It's very similar to what we need in HK to be a true octopus replacement. Just a quick tap of your phone without faffing around with fingerprints.

That is presently how the Octopus sim works. I guess this works because with Octopus you are dealing with pre paid amounts.

But basically nothing stopping Octopus from working with Apple, Samsung, etc to make this possible in HK.

Instead Octopus have decided to go their own way and launch botched, convoluted products with no real take up.
