    Three tethering - possible?

    Hi everyone,

I have seen opposite statements regarding whether tethering with 3 is possible or not. Any actual subscribers here who can confirm their personal experience? I am looking at this plan, which on paper sounds great for my personal needs (I assume I should be able to do VoIP calls with it and even an occasional video chat, right?):

Depends on the plan, just ask them.

I have a 2yr 3HK unlimted plan with 5GB FUP, which I signed up for in November 2015. I can tether.

Forget it. That's why it's so cheap. I had 3G as well, but hated it, as too slow for watching videos and downloading. Spend more, it's worth every penny.

Oh sorry OP I just clicked through to the plan you're on about. No, no tethering for the "4G at sub-3G speeds" plans on any network - and even if you could it'd be unbearably slow.

I strongly recommend you get a proper 4G contract if you're going to use anything at all above WhatsApp, email and Pokemon Go.

If you want data only, Vave do a SIM (they piggyback on CSL's network) for truly unlimited 4G for $268/m, purchased 1 month at a time. Go to a "local" shopping mall and ask for a SIM card at any of the tiny phone shops.

For a little less the regular carrers do "unlimited data plans" with a FUP but think you're going to regularly go over the FUP, it's not worth it as I've found they actually enforce it very strictly (3HK at least), and 128kbps is crippling.

My friend has the Three $88 plan. I have the Sun mobile $88 plan. Three does not allow tethering, Sun mobile does. They are both capped at 384kbps, this is what my friend gets on his speed test and he is always complaining it is slow. I get 800-900kbps on the same speed test and it's OK and I don't have major complaints. I have no idea why Sun mobile give me 3 times the speed they advertise, but this is consistent and I've had this plan for 4-5 years and they have always given me 3 times what they advertise for the last 4-5 years. So I would highly recommend Sun mobile over Three, because they explicitly allow tethering and they are delivering higher speeds than they promise.

Sounds good re SUN. Do you have a link where I can read about them more? And where to buy a SIM+plan? Google gives me their Chinese site only, I don't see an English version and, unfortunately, I don't know Chinese well enough to understand what's going on there.

One of my buddies signed up with China Unicorn and they gave him a additional data only sim as part of his plan. He pays $300ish.

Unfortunately there is no english website for Sun mobile. But walk into a store and they generally speak well enough to hook you up. Just dont forget to bring your HKID and address proof. A couple of other features they offer with the $88 plan:
    - Unlimited CSL wifi. Install the CSL Auto Connect app on your phone and then forget about it and every time you are in a 7-11, shopping mall, starbucks etc you will find you are automatically connected to wifi rather than 3G/4G.
    - If you want to buy a phone as well, they offer outright purchases at a cheaper price, usually around $400 off the latest phone such as a Samsung S7 for $4800 rather than $5200.
