So I am wiping an old iPhone before use. I backed up the phone to iTunes successfully but it was with an older version of the OS. Since then I have updated the OS to the latest version using WIFI directly to the phone. I'm lazy to do so but is it a requirement to back up the phone again IF (and just in case) I want the old data to restore properly at a later time?
I havent used Apple products in ages so forgot. Thanks!

Yes, its easier to do a phone to phone transfer when you get teh new phone. The backup would be for insurance just in case you can't do a phone to phone transfer.
Just update to the iOS to 12.4.1 overnight on both phones.
