Advice on early termination of internet contract

    Hi guys,

Due to some unforeseen circumstances I have to move out of my current premises and won't be in Hongkong for quite a few months. Hence, I am trying to transfer out my Netvigator internet contract which has the bulk of the commitment period still remaining on it.

In the chance that I cannot transfer it out, does anyone have advice on how to get the termination fees reduced or completely waived? I understand that it's a contract and so there will be termination fees, but it just seems excessive that it covers the fees for the entire duration remaining on the contract.

    Thanks in advance!

Netvigator generally waives early termination if the account holder (permanently) departs HK.
Tell them the circumstances; they will tell you documents to submit in order to have penalty waived/reduced.

For me, they only requested flight ticket booking.

Thanks for the advice! Unfortunately, I am not permanently leaving HK, and so do not have an employment contract termination letter. Netvigator requested this from me + one way ticket to waive the fees. Without the letter, they said they will not waive it.

They don't need to know that. It's no skin off their nose, they literally do nothing but have a guy come by with a box at the start, and charge you handsomely for this "service". The infrastructure is already there, they flick a switch to turn it off and you return their crappy box to them. These 2 year contracts across internet and mobile are completely bogus as are their "rules" for termination.

When you return just live somewhere that offers another ISP, as HKT is overpriced rubbish.

Haha! I agree that they do not need to know but I cannot provide them a termination letter, without which they refuse to waive the fees.

Try subsidizing the cost to someone who will take the contract over- like you pay someone to take over your contract. Probably find someone, especially someone who doesn't have a choice of providers (on Peng Chau, no choice but was grateful for high speed Internet- in the US, if you like outside the metro areas, you are out of luck altogether on Internet, sometimes even mobile phone service...yes, lived with satellite Internet for a few years, will never complain about hard-wired Internet service after that joyful experience...forget using the Internet during rain or snow, for example...).

See if they will suspend your service for a few months until you return to HK, then transfer it to your new address.

You can get a fake one way air ticket from fakeflightticket.com for $5. I've used these services in the past to create fake tickets to show some airlines at the checkin counters because they dont let you board without showing proof of onward travel in some cases.

Fake employment termination letter should be pretty easy too. Just don't put you real company logo on the letterhead, just pick some random company off the internet.

Thank you for the (sometimes very creative!) advice everyone. I will consider which one is least likely to land me in legal hot potato and pursue that probably!
