Unlocking iPhone in HK then returning to US.

    Dear tech savvy geoexpat users,

I'm an international student studying in Los Angeles and am returning to Hong Kong for christmas break. I bought my iPhone from AT&T here in the US but want to be able to use it in Hong Kong too when I go back.

This means that I will have to unlock it, correct?

    I have two questions.

    1) Where can i go to unlock my iphone in Hong Kong

    2) If I do unlock it, can I pop back my AT&T sim and resume normal service (3G), when I return to Los Angeles?

All your help is greatly appreciated!

Find the building called "Sincere" in Mong Kok... it is depicted on the map in that MTR station, so it should be easy to find. It' contains probably 100 little cell phone stores inside.

Once inside.. go to the second floor, and start asking around about who can install a Turbo Sim inside the phone for you. I paid $380 (without negotiating) to have such a service completed on my iphone 3g there, the service took about an hour, and could be less during the weekdays.

Unlock works like a charm, is unoticeable as it is inside the phone, and when you go back to USA, it is still unlocked for any GSM network, uninstallation is not required.

Your phone is required to be jailbroken btw for the unlock to work.

you can do it all by yourself, no need to pay.

google "iphone dev" and you should get all the info you require.

Go to youtube and search for unlock iphone. I just upgraded my iphone to 3.0 and unlocked it last week and my iphone is 2G, I stuck a sim card in it, no problem. Don't waste your money like other said.

why you cant just do it yourself amazes me.

just go to below link for jailbreaking (must be done first):
    iClarified - Tutorials - iPhone

then go to here for unlocking:
    iClarified - Tutorials - iPhone

for both links...just find the one that fits your phone model (i.e. 2G, 3G, 3Gs), and indicates your platform (i.e. mac, windows).

iclarified provides a how to guide, and links for all needed software and firmware files.

I used the iclarified.com to unlock my own every time there was a OS change. It is easy.

Iclarified provides the tutorials on how to do it. iphone dev are the people that produce the software to do the jailbreaks / unlocks.
