No internet access from iPhone if updated to 3.1?

Is it really true that users in HK who updated their iPhone to 3.1 cannot access the internet unless they contract with 3HK?

I know that when I put my Smartone sim card into my iphone (with 3.1.2 firmware) I can still get Wifi and can still use skype.

I don't think so, Apple Online selling unlocked device too and never restricted users to use any network.

Thanks but please check my latest posting under the thread "How was your experience breaking contract with smartone?" You will know why I asked. Perhaps the smartone manager was trying to get me to join other plans.

You can still access Internet on the phone but you can't access tethering unless you jailbreak and use pdanet.

He hasn't got a clue what he is talking about.

I am using a jailbroken iphone with firmware 3.1.2 in HK on SMV and its working with 3G. I am also sure many many others are doing the same thing.

I think the manager got confused with tethering, which will not work on jailbroken iphones, however there are work arounds, as SXC has already indicated, like PDANet.

hajime, you are spreading alot of FUD with your statements. The above two statements you make are very different.

Please be more specific.
