Blackberry and other phone prices ...

I am planning to buy a blackberry from smart tone and get a separate contract to be able to call friends in Australia and lightly check my email every now and then ... lots of people suggested going to tst or monkok to buy a phone from there ... Is it really worth it and do these shops give you a one year warranty like vodafone or PCCW? ...

also once am done from HK (1 year from now) am planning to go back to australia and i am wondering if these phone are locked?

It sad to say this but it seems that the staff in the phone shops are more interested in making a sale than giving you real info ... its frustrating ...

As far as I know, 99% of phones should not be locked when purchased in HK, be sure to take note of the customer service reps name at the shop before buying if you need to follow up.

Anyway to test the phone right after purchasing? ie; buy from vodafone and borrow a csl sim and stick it in there, if you can dial out, it should'nt be locked?

The following is just my opinion, I don't trust those non-telco stores when buying phones ,so I prefer to buy from a telco store, I also get discounts and free stuff (garbage which I put on my office desk like nokia clocks and pen holders), in the long run, I'm happy.

I purchased my phone in Mongkok. No problems. I think it's much cheaper than the phone companies - and cleaner transaction too rather than all the strange payments/rebates the phone companies get up to.

but what was the price difference if i may ask ...? you can buy a BB Bold for 4888 at PCCW or vodafone and stick a sim card and use on a normal plan ... am not interested in the blackberry email or other stuff ... just a phone and internet + its organisation capability! if the savingf was worth it i'll consider it ... if you like you can PM me if you want
    cheers

Mate, if you want basic internet access I wouldn't bother with a BB. Too fiddly. The BB specialist forums have many threads on problems getting internet access on non-BB plans. Save your money and get something like a Palm Treo or HTC Touch thingy.

I don't think you can surf the net if you're not on a BB plan.

And if you're not in it for its functions, why get the BB at all? There's soo many other options just for internet browsing..

You can. There are several ways round it, I've done it.

Yeah but it's not easy! Not easy at all. If you don't want to faff around, get something else.
