Prepaid Sim Card or Calling Card to make International Calls to India from HK?

    Hi,

We will be in HK for 12 days on holiday.

    1) We want to buy two Pre Paid (Stored Value) sim cards so that me and my husband can use our cellphones and call each other while in HK.

    2) Also, what is the cheapest Sim Card provider/service to call India from HK?

    3) Is there any IDD calling card which can be used to call India as i believe the Sim Cards would be quite expensise to make IDD calls to India.

    Thanks,
    Kareena

Just about the first phone shop you find walking out of your hotel will be fine for the SIM cards and just about the first 7-11 for the phone cards. The differences here are marginal.

PCCW prepaid simcards at 7-11 stores are good enough. Will you be calling too often to india? If yes, then goto Tsim sha tsui and buy calling cards(delhi post, hihi card) from chungking mansion. You can ask the shop about the most economical ones.

If u dont call too often then PCCW calling cards available at 7-11 stores are ok.

Calling IDD directly using SIM is pretty expensive.

Just you wait until all the hidden charges appear! Shinetown is full of them. Tell us after you used it how cheap it really was.

Calling india should be nearly 50HK cents in that SIM card. Better than PCCW but better try the calling cards from chung king mansion. Also the coverage is an issue, as network disappears often.

I am looking for an online site to purchase prepaid phone cards that can call from japan and jordan to the US at a reasonable rate. I am also wondering if there is any difference between the different phone cards and calling cards in terms of quality or are they just all the same. Any information on this would be helpful!

Try the true India calling card- available from Chung King mansion as well as Indian stores all over Hong Kong. For about $38 HKD you get 8 hours call time to India from a cell phone. For a pre-paid sim I prefer 3 as it gives you data as well.

Really? Or that's just what the advertisement says? In general, with prepaid phonecards you can only achieve the advertised duration (if you can at all) by using the whole card in one call. Otherwise there are per call, per day and all sorts of other "surcharges" which mean you might end up getting an effective per minute rate which is several times greater than what you might expect from the headline.
