It is probably a problem with the device. There are lots of reports on the Internet that Nexus One has serious issues with 3G. For example:

But I can't even connect to either Edge or 3G. there's no data connection ;(
Nevermind, fixed. Found out you need to manually put the APN.
Nexus 6 will be a winner.
Nexus 2, 3, 4 and 5 you can skip.
How's the casing? What is it made of? Plastic or some kind of metal like the Milestone?
The casing is made out of plastic, but it doesn't feel cheap at all!
And...do you think the other Nexus will last anywhere near that??!?!
Who knows if the Nexus 6 will last that either.
Now a days the life expectancy of a smart phone should be relatively low. The people buying then change them every few months, they are not expected to be used much/day compared to a PC, so they are manufactured just to be just good enough. There are exceptions, phones that you can pound, drop, put a thousand plus hours of air time & data, hammer the keypad/touch screen, but well it takes a year or two to figure out which ones those are.
