    2nd Hand Items

When I moved out of New York, I sold my TV on craigslist.
When I moved out of London, I sold my TV on gumtree.

I've just arrived in Hong Kong and found the TV prices quite egregious.

I've heard natives don't like buying second hand items so there isn't really a market, but surely with the number of expats moving in and out of town all the time, there must be a place where people get rid of all the stuff they don't want to ship with them. Anyone know of a similar site?

Or otherwise anyone leaving town soon wanting to get rid of a 40+" TV?

    Occupy HK.

I suggest you occupy Gumtree, craigslist or here for expats selling their wares when leaving.

You want to find wealthy people that need to leave HK in a hurry and couldn't be arsed to sell their (expensive) stuff at market price. My suggestion is go to the Wellcome/Marketplace at The Repulse Bay and check out their notice board for "expat moving sales". Also try the Marketplace/Great on the Peak, Stanley, Tai Tam, Parkview and maybe Shouson Hill.

These are also good places to pick up second hand european cars at discounted prices.

this site also has classifieds - I've purchased and sold stuff on here before. Yahoo auctions if you can cope with the chinese.

Many thanks. Will do a survey around the local marketplaces as you suggest.

Check out the classifieds, ask around your circle of friends, colleagues etc. My trainer got a free TV and couch when he moved here because a friend of a friend was relocating!

I often hear that locals don't like second hand stuff but I believe this is because expats just don't know where to look! You won't find second hand shops in the glitzy western style malls of course but nearly every estate shopping area has at least two or three second hand shops. You can get everything from TVs to washing machines, air conditioners, etc... Probably too far but on Chi Lok estate in Tuen Mun there is a great second hand place that specialises in flat sreen TVs.
