You can buy 12-month gold memberships at the store, why would anyone give Microsoft their credit card if you don't need to? You can also get one months as well. Or if you don't care about gamerscores, you can sign in as a different person at least 3 or 4 times for the free month before they limit it.

Got my XBOX membership cancelled just now. For the benefit of others, you cannot cancel by logging into your account, neither through the TV nor the Internet.
