    Subwoofer - broken voice coil

    Hi All,

I have a Canton 12.2 subwoofer (bought in Jan but with only 6 months warranty..) - the voice coil exploded yesterday - I SWEAR the volume wasn't up loud .. quite disappointed.

Anyhow, looking for options now - if anyone has suggestions?

As I see it, I have a few options:

    1. Find an authorised Canton repair place and ask them to rebuild the woofer, I guess this will be quite pricey
    2. Find some third party shop that can do similar to 1
    3. Find an alternative woofer driver and put that into the box

I am 99% sure the circuity is still fine, I can see visible damage to the driver though, so it's certainly not power cable, input etc related so please don't waste time trying to troubleshoot.

    Any ideas on the above?

If you go #3 look for Tang Speakers, they are good quality and reasonably (not dirt cheap) priced too. They are Taiwanese, they got a Chinese website too (add *.cn). They are highly regarded in the DIY scene.

Driver - TB SPEAKER CO., LTD.

How do you know the driver has incurred damage, can see it damaged, as this is powered /active sub, it's unlikely you turned it too high, cos it's a big subwoofer and amp is not that small

More likely, it clipped and short circuit, did you RCA from amp or, wired from speaker terminal to your main speakers?

It's noted that any third party driver may not sound right, you need to match the impendence and nominal power rating

    RCA from amp.
    Volume wasn't up loud.
Physical damage - bits of the woofer have broken off internally

(See the bit of metal on TOP of the magnet...)

Good riddance. My prayers have been heard. Thanks.
