Hey 'mericans, where do you cash checks?

I received a check for a US Fed tax refund recently. I remember last year depositing it at HSBC (where I have an Hk account). I remember it was quite costly (something like 50 or 70USD) and it took several weeks to clear. In fact, they don't even guarantee that it will clear.

But anyways, anyone know of a better alternative? thanks in advance!

um into a us account and then transferring the $ here? otherwise, you're pretty much stuck.

If you're HSBC Premier then your Relationship Manager is able to waive the charge for depositing the cheque. They have done so for me with a small foreign cheque (tens of US$) on a couple of occasions.

I keep on getting these things, as I can't cash them without heavy charges I was thinking of wallpapering something with them.

My credit union allows me to e-deposit my check. What's needed:

    [1] Windows PC running IE
    [2] An attached scanner
