    Apologies and a banking question

    Hi,

Apologies to those who I had previous contacts through GeoExpat... I seemed to have disappeared from the face of GeoExpat because I forgot my login name and password and was too lazy to have it reset. It also turned out I am not moving back to Hong Kong anymore. Got a job at Citigroup in the US and decided to stay. It seems like my previous posts about setting up poker games raised a lot of interest, but too bad, I won't be there to participate. Anyhow, banking question... I visit Hong Kong every year or sometimes twice a year for a month each time. I'm sick of paying overseas usage charge from my credit card here in US. I'm a permanent resident in HK and can use my parents address.... is there a bank that offers free international banking? It seems like most banks would charge even if I try to transfer to the same bank in a different country. All I want is to access my money when I'm in Hong Kong without dealing with complicated tax issues or extra charges. I thought about getting a credit card from Hong Kong, but I'm not sure if I can pay it off online (say accessing a HK bank account from US to pay balance). Any suggestions?

    Lori

I would recommend leaving some funds in a HK bank account, get a HK credit card (preferably with a free gift) and an Octopus card. When you come back you can use the credit card and Octopus card for most things. If you link your Octopus card to your credit card it will automatically top up and you can set autopay for your credit card from your bank account.
