It's free to do an online transfer to other local banks with SCB. I tried to do a transfer from my SCB to my HSBC account and, while it was free, the clearing time is about the same as that of a cheque.

Yes, because they are all on the same Jetco network. HSBC is the odd one out.

But I transferred to my HSBC account free of charge. Since HSBC is not in Jetco, then shouldn't I have been charged for the transfer?

Maybe because it's your own account, not a third party?

Online transfers from SCB to a third party's HK-based HSBC account are free of charge.

As people above have said, SCB (Standard Chartered) is free to do online transfers to any other local HK bank account. HSBC charge $30. I dont know what others charge.

This is one reason I left HSBC. It was originally $5 a few years ago, then they bumped it up slowly a few times within the space of a year to $30. I called and complained to them and they told me some BS story about how they improved their systems and needed to charge more for it now.

If you want fee free transfers, the HSBC way is to write cheques. They discourage online banking. Their logic is mind boggling to a pleb like me, but thats the way these big wigs think.
