    Motorbike theft insurance

How important is it to have motorbike theft insurance in HK? Would you recommend having it and what are the costs like?

Also, are there restrictions imposed on where to park, etc? Currently, I park in one of the many free parking spots for motorbikes in HK. Would theft insurance require the owner to only park moto in a commercial parking spot?

    Thanks!

not sure you can get theft insurance, I know you can only get 3rd party insurance for motobikes. those free parking spots are great targets for thieves. chain your bike to a post if possible, just locking the tyres is useless, they just pick up the bike and shove it in the back of the van. my brother and a friend both had their bikes stolen. Oh and bikes get stolen from the car park as well, same method, drive a van into the car park and it comes out with a bike in the back off it.

And what would stop men with a van who spend their pastime stealing motorbikes to take some heavy duty wire or bolt cutter along with them?

takes too long, why bother when there are plenty of other bikes to choose from, just pick up, put in back of van and drive off.

At OP, Police cant do much, bikes get chopped up or stuffed in containers and shipped off to other Asian countries, mostly likely Taiwan.

I ride every day... I wouldnt say that here qualifies as proper cold but since so little heated grips arnt common... like HK flats feel cold in the winter - cos no central heating generally, gloves and hand gaurds on your bars...

u can get full comp- with theft but its expensive 10K per year as opposed to 1.7K Third party only,,,

    Try these guys:
    tanic Moto Centre Ltd
A good place for big expat bikes. Some accessories. Friendly, but an arrogant and misinformed mechanic spoils it a bit. Prices a bit high.
    Ground Floor shop A,
    Seabright Plaza 9-23,
    Shell Street,
    North Point.
    Hong Kong
    Tel: 2512 2228

btw, I ride everyday. Just wear gloves if you really want during winter. It's not THAT cold anyway...
