Simple question. If I purchase something on a HK credit card do I get the same protection I would from a UK CC. For example purchase a holiday and company goes bust ?

Depends on your CC contract&terms and conditions.
Generally, I would assume no - check your terms carefully.
EG :
A north american AMEX gold card gives you rental car insurance CDW.
A HKG AMEX gold card does not.
Not the same protection. See the Oasis thread for some information: http://hongkong.geoexpat.com/forum/2...d26336-29.html
Nope, there's no charge dispute protection for credit cards in HK (you can't get the credit card provider to reverse a transaction if the goods are not provided for example).
Brilliant thanks all That's why I like this place so much. Given all my other experiences of the last 3-1/2 months I'd kind of assumed this was the case but this is better than google for the most informed answers. Booking on UK card it is the !!!
Apart from the credit card itself, in the UK there are also certain travel associations (e.g., ATOL?) which protect consumers who purchase holiday packages and maybe travel. Nope, nothing like that here, of course!
Consumer protection in Hong Kong is basically non-existent.
