Hi guys - giving this thread a bump.

Any other recommendations for a tax agent in HK who can help me file my Australian returns?

Just asked SMAT for a quote. Have asked another agent here for a quote but would like others (he quoted me AUD300-400 for a basic tax return, which sounds too high, but please correct me if that is market price).

That sounds about right to me. Australian tax is not that simple and I think a few hundred dollars is the going rate to start from.

My impression was that basic Australian tax returns done in Australia were significantly cheaper (like AUD50-150). I'm flying over to Syd in a few months time so if the cost difference is big enough I would wait and do it there. Obviously if it isn't then I would prefer to do it here!

Yes well you are not an Australian resident though are you so it's NOT a "basic return". You do know Australia taxes on worldwide income?

Only if you're a resident for tax purposes.

If you're a non-resident for tax purposes (most ex-pats) then you're only taxed on income derived in Oz such as rent from an investment property. As a non-res you're not required to declare or pay tax on any ASX shares (gains/dividends).

You also don't have to pay tax or declare income from any o'seas rental property. The downside to being a non-resident is you lose the tax free threshold and 50% CGT discount if you hold an asset for more than 12mths.

Last year I paid AU$1,200 for my tax return using an accountant in Oz

If anyone wants a good finance broker i can highly recommend Shahin at Elite Property Finance. He will reply to your email 24/7 and often within minutes. He has an uncanny ability to think outside the square and get the deal done where other brokers have failed.

You can go to the local shopping mall and get your tax return done by a "tax agent" like H&R Block but these guys aren't accountants. A fee of $50 - $150 would only apply to a basic PAYE return, something which you could do yourself online and save your money. If you have rental property, shares, managed funds, depreciation schedules etc then use an accountant.
