    Thumbs up HK's least-worst bank account - up-to-date guide...

Hong Wrong went branch-to-branch researching this over the weekend... Citibank open late and now have proper VISA debit cards (not convoluted 'linked account' ones). Whilst Standard Chartered have free intra-bank transfers within HK. Both beat HSBC in terms of features... http://hongwrong.com/hong-kong-best-bank-accounts/

He did misunderstand one thing. SCB ATM cards can be used in all Jetco network ATM or free, not just Citibank and BOC.

'Least worst" just about sums up my experience with HK banks!

Standard Chartered has given me the best service so far.

As for Citi, I'm regularly tempted to open an account. Each time I've changed my mind after off-putting encounters with their staff when I go in saying I'd like to open an account.

Having said that I have a terrific HSBC manager via my premium account (employer perk :-)). She is the only reason why I stay with them. (If anyone wants a decent manager, let me know).

When he says "Visa Debit Card", does this mean it will be accepted as a mode of payment in most shops? With HSBC, you can either pay by mastercard or, rarely, by EPS. I've missed having a Visa Debit card the way I understand it back in the UK.

    Wherever VISA is accepted.

With HSBC you can get a VISA or MasterCard Credit card, not debit cards. They used to have VISA debit cards years ago, not anymore. EPS is accepted at most retail outlets, just can't be used at restaurants or the like.

My Citibank ATM card is not a visa debit.... it is just an ATM + EPS card

My UK Citibank card is a proper Visa Debit and Paywave card though.

@auss - they're rolling out VISA Debit cards for existing Citibank customers - have you not gotten one yet? If it has that symbol, it should be usable online.
