I opened my citibank account in about 20 mins, no minimum required if your salary is paid into the account. Also got my credit card with Citibank on the back of my work contract, received the card in the post within the first month of being in HK.

I do most of my spending on credit cards (and pay off monthly) to earn points so I easily hit any minimum spend requirements, not sure how much the fee actually is though.

You can get a credit card linked to a time deposit if you don't have a regular income.

Only advantage of an Advance account with HSBC is the free (no fees) platinum visa credit card you get. Then again you have to have that minimum balance or you end up paying HKD120 a month IIRC.

Works out cheaper than HKD180 fees for the same card with HSBC, or so I was told. Frankly it's beginning to feel a lot more like a scam to me now, since my credit card application was rejected twice now for stupid reasons that weren't even my fault.

My suggestion, go for SCB as HSBC is pretty rubbish.
