Transferring money from Mainland China to HK and from HK to USA

I am wanting to freelance teach English online to people in mainland China, but I am trying to figure out a way to get paid.
How I can get money transferred from mainland China to Hong Kong and then from Hong Kong to USA? I have some friends in China who might be able to help me, but no one in HK. Thank you so much for your advice and help!!

    1. are you going to pay tax on a withholding basis ?
    2. are you likely to visit china at anytime in the future ?
    3. how do you avoid being tagged as a money launderer for frequent transfer of money out of china to hk, then out of hk to USA

your approach is tricky.. assuming china government is able to track you action online and is almighty as some of the forumers believe, then you might be arrested for tax evasion when you land in any of the china territory in future...

Use a tutoring website like Italki.

@freeier Woah!! I guess I won’t be doing that! Thank you for making me aware of this

@MandM! Is Alipay the same thing as Pay Pal? Can money be sent to directly to the USA using Alipay? If so how?

@Drunken Master Thank you for this good suggestion!
Do they have pay pal in China or is it called Ali pay in China? Can they use this to send money directly from China to the USA, if so how do they do that?

@mrgoodkat Thank you so much for that excellent suggestion. However, since I have friends in China who might be able to help me find students, I was hoping to avoid the middle man and be able to earn more, Italki is really good, but they make 15% commission off of all your earnings.

    PayPal is different from alipay.

Would recommend you try both the contract brokered platform and the direct referrals and see what the comfortable mix in terms of revenue in your pocket is.

Don't fuss too much a out commissions until you have sold all your time.

Suppose you are based in Hong Kong, you can use moneychanger shops located on the streets in HK. I just asked how it works a few days ago. Someone pay you to your alipay, wechat wallet or something similar or bank accounts in Mainland. Pay Pal is not popular in China including HK and the exchange rate is not good. Transfer your RMB to the moneychanger's alipay, wechat or bank accounts. He or she can then pay you HKD or USD in Hong Kong. From HK to USA, you should find a way to have a rate close to the banks' rates in HK. Any rate less larger than 7.90 is considered bad.

There are many other teachers teaching online. Check the tax requirements first.
