I use the debit card all the time abroad. I've got a holiday money float in most of the account currencies which I top up when there is some fx volatility, but have found the conversion to be fair when I do need to convert on the fly. Hsbc global money (UK/Jersey multicurrency equivalent proposition) is a tiny bit better at least for non-euro European currencies but it was a small difference when I looked into it.

Also don't discount using payme unionpay where its accepted. FX spreads are tiny as UP gets heavily regulated by our overlords up north.

Thanks for that. I've applied for the card.

I'm not familiar with PayMe at all. Is this using a PayMe account as a virtual UP debit card and then getting kickback on the reload of the PayMe from an HSBC credit card?

Yeah. At the moment while there is a card number you can't bind the UP card to Apple pay/Google wallet so it works via QR code only. I believe Apple Pay and google etc is coming.

As you say, some reward points for topping up payme with HKD (limited to 3k a month I think... after that you have to do a bank account transfer) and then a very good FX rate over to RMB.

Not sure about "best", but personally if a place doesn't take AMEX (which has good fx rewards despite fee), then I'll use my "Boc Taobao World Mastercard", which has a 0% fx fee, but no rewards.

Some people prefer rewards on FX spend despite a 1.95% (usually) fee, in that case it depends if the reward is worth it to you or not. (As an example, BoC "Chill" card has a 5% rebate on fx, so even with the fee it becomes cheaper. But the rebate is capped at a measly HK$150/mo, or HK$3000 spend)

    Some other options:
    - SCB Smart Card: zero FX fee plus 0.56% cashback
    - MOX (set to Asia Miles): zero FX fee plus HKD4 to 1AM [you do need HKD250k in account though]
    - HSBC Multi Currency Debit card as mentioned above

Unfortunately the SC Smart Card has recently been nerfed. You now need to spend at least HK$4,000 within your monthly billing cycle in order to get any cash back for that month.

On the plus side, it's still a zero FX fee card, no matter how little you spend on it.

The banks kind of won, I cant really spend the effort to monthly keep on top of their changes and then remember meeting all of these thresholds, limits and targets. I accepted I dont run optimal anymore, so be it.
