ALso, in some of the more populat locations, there is often a v long waiting list for safety deposit boxes. I was lucky when my mum passed that the bank manager agreed to transfer the name to me when/after we we going through probate, since she recognised me from going with my mum to the bank over the past 30+years she had a box there.

We use the cat's litter box for similar reasons.

    This is a good point.

I should ask the bank it they will make my box a jointly owned one (currently in my name only).

I can just imagine how the conversation with a local elder would go if you tell them it's better to sell their gold and buy some ETF witchcraft.

Had this chat with an 80 year old aunt recently... No point banging your head against a brick wall.

An issue we have faced in HK is melting / refining / selling gold and silver is non trivial. Easier to keep in a locker and kick the can down to another generation.

Buy a small safe. Put it in the bottom of a wardrobe. Attach to wall if necessary.

Maybe not as secure as a bank (but who knows) but cheaper in the long term.
