He can be stopped from leaving....

Its entirely possible that your friend could be detained upon presentation at HK Immigration channels.

The Bankrupty Ordinance provides that upon an application by a creditor to the court, the court may, if it has probable reason to suspect and believe the debtor has absconded and gone outside Hong Kong with a view to avoiding service of a bankruptcy petition [or to avoiding appearing in a bankruptcy petition, or to avoiding examination in respect of his affairs ect ect, and a bunch of other reasons], then the court may issue a warrant authorising the Bailiff of the High Court of Hong Kong and his assistants and to all police officers of Hong Kong and to the Commissioner of Correctional Services to take the debtor and to deliver him to the Commissioner of Correctional to keep in prison until such time as the court may order.

Id say, your friend better make arrangements before deciding to leave......

these are people we do not like... whilst i do not know his situation... if he is still jollying around in another country earning money and not paying back (or planning to pay back) the debt, then i don't know why you are friends with him.

he obviously doesnt care that someone out there has lost their money and it is no better than stealing. he is pretty cold hearted to think that other people out there can live without the 1.5m he took and has no intention to pay back. 1.5m could mean the difference between sending their kids to a good school, to eating 3 meals a day, to a new house, getting married, sending their parents to a nursing home etc etc.
I agree. This is basically theft. While I have some sympathy for folks who "get into a mess" and struggle to extract themselves, wilful default and skipping the country is wrong and I hope the police do track these people down.

i think the law is not what the OPs fren shld be worried..
he shld be more worried about the out of law behavior of the debt collection agency.. since he obviously had some intention to bail, if they catch up with him i think it won't be just simple interrogation...

Running away from your own debt is a stupid way to go and IMO shameful. Your friend was foolish enough to get him/herself in that situation and instead of standing up and facing the problem...they choose to run away.

Doesn't matter if you owe $100 or $100,000....you spent it, you owe, you have to repay it. Even if the banks do not take you to court, it just immoral.

Guaranteed the banks will go after you even for $1. Stay out of the country!

as long you don't owe money to the triad, i think you're okay. gov is worse than the triad so you better pay your taxes. but banks and CC i won't worry about so much especially it is not even 10k usd.

that 1.5 mil sterling story is kind of hard to beleive. sure it is not 1.5 mil pesos?
