10% cash back from Standard & Chartered

Has anyone noticed the deceptive ads putting out by SC offering a 10% cash rebate in connection with usually a large chain shops? The latest is with Fortress. The deal is supposed that you'd receive 10% cash rebate from SC if you spend $5000 in total at Fortress over a specified period of time. Now, that would mean that one could expect to get back at least $500 for spending at least $5,000.

Here's where the deception is: in fact, the maximum cash rebate is $200, which would make the rebate at most a sad 4%, rather than the advertised 10%. This practice has been going on for God knows how long. I'm totally surprised that no consumer has raised the issue and the HK government has not done any thing to stop the deceptive practice. Comments?

Nice catch. And nothing to say about the "rebate" offer?

do they have any other shops in this promotion?

there must be some conditions (however restricted) whereby you can get 10% back... otherwise it is just blatant false advertisement and they would get into trouble for it.

It is indeed blatant false advertising. They had the exact same promotion with Jusco in June. Apparently it has been getting away from it.

It does tell you the maximum amount of rebate in the fine print though*.

    * I haven't seen the SCB specific rebate, but have seen similar ones and and sure they just had the "conditions apply" phrase.

Actually I do have something to say but your inability to correctly name the bank questioned your ability to accurately assess the offer.

No. The deal is you spend a total of $5000 at any local merchants (not just Fortress) to receive a 10% cash rebate from Fortress.

Please read the "3 simple steps":
Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited

IMO, a lack of literacy on your part does not necessarily constitute a fraud by the bank.

aahhhh!! so there are those restrictions (conditions apply).

you can get 10% rebate on your spending at Fortress as long as you don't spend more than $2000 there. but that means u have to spend and additional $3000 elsewhere during july and august!

so yes... a bit sly, but better than nothing right? especially if you were planning on spending that much anyway!

It really is not that difficult to understand. There is nothing sly about it. Spend 5K on your credit card at any local merchant (ie doesnt have to be Fortress, just spend 5K anywhere on anything), then when you purchase something with your credit card at Fortress, you will get 10$ off, with a maximum rebate of $200. You don't need to spend 5K at Fortress!

that doesn;t sound bad. spend 2k at fortress then use 3k on beers at the bars and restaurants. not that difficult.
