It's hard coming from the UK where we're now so used to completely free* personal banking. As long as you're in credit there are no charges for anything, and online transfers to other accounts are in many cases instant.

*Unless you get conned into signing up for one of the "Advantage" type accounts!

Somebody pays for it somehow - banks aren't charities.

From PDLM's link I found the following:

Interbank transfer in Hong Kong dollars
The standard rate at a branch is HK$170, but if you use HSBC
Internet Banking, your cost drops to only HK$30 (by e-Transfer, ie
save HK$140) or HK$50 (by Express Transfer, ie save HK$120).

$170 in the branches! Even $30 to do a single transfer from one account to another is an absolute rip off.

    SCB is free!

Yes banks arent charities. But why are cheques free and online banking has to pay $30 to do a single local HKD transfer? This is my point. HSBC is stupid. It is much easier and cheaper for them if we all do online banking. But they insist on printing chequebooks and all these manual and ancient procedures.

In the UK that would be the taxpayer! And they are a charity if they're the recipient

Have been with Standard Chartered for years as well and haven't had any issues. Only thing that's peeved me off recently is that most of their new ATM's don't accept cheque deposits. You can only deposit cheques during banking hrs!!
