I've just gone through this whole process to switch my card from UnionPay to Cirrus so that it will work in Australia, now it doesnt work in Japan. Grrrr.

I hope some other ATM's around here accept Cirrus or I am buggered. I will have a look after work tonight.
Can you find a Post Office? Their ATMs should allow Cirrus.

Re 7/11 in Japan, their contract with Mastercard (to which Cirrus is tied to) ended in Dec 2009.

Yeah I should be able to find one I hope. Thanks.

FWIW, the 7/11 takes Plus as well as UnionPay. But not Cirrus.

Hopefully not a big deal. But it just drives me crazy!

My replacement card finally arrived - it has Maestro / Cirrus and EPS / Jetco on the back. I have feeling that you almost have to demand a Cirrus card now.

For Japan, Post Offices are the best place for ATMs, but be careful about their opening hours. See here. Also Citibank might accept them. See here.

I found a "Shinsei Bank" ATM with a Cirrus logo and it works. So crisis over and the Standard Chartered cards do work in Japan. If you have a UnionPay card, it will work in 7/11 only and I think nowhere else, whereas the Cirrus cards work at Shinsei and probably other places such as post office that people above have suggested. Thanks!

Hi bdw, sorry for your bad experience. I have always had difficulties to get cash out of Japanese ATMs. My Visa Debit card (issued in the UK) is accepted by ATMs in most contries, but it seems most of the high street Japanese bank ATMs would not accept. The only banks that I discovered whose ATMs would accept the international Visa card are 7/11 and Post Office.

Maybe Japanese 7/11 ATMs only support the Visa/Plus not the MasterCard/Cirrus. Try to find an ATM in Post Office. They are normally good. Good luck!

Its really a Japan thing, not many of their ATMs accept international cards, and you have to hunt around or do your research in advance to find one. Like you I had that same problem with my UK debit card before I moved to HK.

The new card has not only my name on it, it has a maestro/cirrus, EPS and Jetco logo. So I believe that makes it option no. (2) in bdw's post above. I guess I'll take both cards when I travel international in the future, just in case. I already had problems getting money on a certain ATM in Thailand with my no. (2) card.

On my new SCB Visa there is only the Jetco and Plus logo on the back. And I am generally afraid of using credit cards on the ATM because I once used cash advance by mistake ;-)

Is there a way to get money on HSBC and Hang Seng banks using SCB cards, without paying the international fee?
100LL, does your old Union Pay card still work even after you received your new Cirrus card?

The reason I am asking is because I am applying for a Cirrus SCB PB card. My current one carries UnionPay logo. I asked the branch if I could keep my old one once the new card arrives. They answered that the old one will cease to work once the new card is issued.

Can you please share your experience on this? Thanks.

I needed to return the card with the Union Pay logo before they would process my application for a Cirrus one.

I became a SCB customer today. The card they gave me does not have Cirrus on it, so I asked for one and was informed that it would be sent to me in about a week. Obviously this means the old card will be useless and has to be cut up.

P.S. - Any Excel Banking customers here? What the hell is Excel Banking?

Excel banking is like HSBC's PowerVantage (or whatever they call it these days).
