Guanxi in Chinese, Blat in Russian, Wasta in MidEasten-Business Networking Community

    Dear all,

'Guanxi' in Chinese, Blat in Russian, Wasta in MidEastern; different names in different culture but all mean the same - importance of good relationship, network and contacts to ensure success in any business especially in China region.

Guanxi, An Important Chinese Business Element

“Guanxi” literally means "relationships", stands for any type of relationship. In the Chinese business world, however, it is also understood as the network of relationships among various parties that cooperate together and support one another. The Chinese businessmen mentality is very much one of "You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours." In essence, this boils down to exchanging favors, which are expected to be done regularly and voluntarily. Therefore, it is an important concept to understand if one is to function effectively in Chinese society.

I am not a Chinese, but I extremely admire this notion of Guanxi. It is fascinating for me. Although I am not born in Hong Kong, I strongly believe that all of us: like minded people out there can collaborate and create a mutual "win-win" Guanxi Network.

I know there are may locals as well as expats out there who may agree with me but wondering where to start from like how I was. Here were are... lets team up.... Bond with each other, Help each other, Achieve collectively and Succeed eventually.

Let us form a new form of Guanxi/Blat/Wasta Group .... name it BHAS (Bond, Help, Achieve, and Succeed)..

Lets meet up, enjoy coffee and start building relationship....

I thought the 'Xi' in Guangxi stood for West, and that the 'Dong' in Guangdong stood for East?

your description of guanxi doesn't seem to conform to what it actually means in practice, which seems to include nepotism, or sufficiently reflect the wide cultural implications that guanxi actually describes...you paint a pretty rosy view of the whole concept.

"I am an entrepreneur by profession"

Does this mean you could not find a job as a management consultant? I am still waiting for the free party that PDLM was going to throw when you landed a top job.

I just love someone who's been here only a few month giving us a lesson on Guanxi or Guangxi or however you want to spell it.

Sorry to pore cold water on it but it won't be given by sitting down for a coffee and my guess is that I could see a bible coming out from under the table half way through.

Guanxi is normally a way to make yourself more powerful, usually achieved through bribery, gifts, copius amounts of alcohol and virgin schoolgirls. It puts certain people above the law in some cases. End of the day it's all about money.

I've been offered the bribes, received the gifts, been given stupid amounts of alchohol. I seem to be missing one thing off that list.

Then you're a prime candidate for Guanxi then. Now, where do you sign up?
