For the incorporation of a limited company, is it compulsory to name a secretary or is a director enough?

You need a minimum of two names to register a limited company. Both need to be directors.

No you don't- you can have a sole director but you have to name a secretary. My wife was mine as it's a nominary role.
The accounting firm which you will have to nominate anyway for your audit can nominate a secretary for a very minimal fee.
