I have considered and initially discounted Nice, I understand what you mean it will be easier language wise, but I go to the Alps once or twice a year so Lyon is much more convenient for me. I'm not too concerned about the language side of things, with patience and if I find the right people to work with it should be ok I think. And Nice seems like it has inflated prices from the English investors, and too reliant on tourism for my liking.

Grenoble is an interesting option to me. Not one I would have expected someone to mention. I've been there a number of times and it's nice, but quite small really. Out of curiosity why is Grenoble your 'only place to buy in France'?

It's a city that has grown a lot in the past 20 years. Top business school there now (by top I mean top 5/6 in France, not in the league of Harvard or anything like that), close to ski resort, quite a few high tech firms etc etc.
