4% retirement rule - valid in HK

Been reading early retirement blogs and all mention the 4% rule.

    https://www.investopedia.com/terms/f...rcent-rule.asp

basically save up 25x your yearly expenses in equities/bonds and you can draw down 4% a year forever for retirement and not run down your capital.

Be interested to know if it be valid in HK

With a 1.5% withdrawal rate, one with a 30k monthly budget would need 24 million HKD to FIRE

Probably we should become FIRE in HK, and enjoy our retirement elsewhere.

Use this calculator to visualize: https://www.firecalc.com

It will show how likely your money will run out in the future.

I personally like the simulators on portfoliovisualizer.com

This one is pretty good in terms of building a portfolio and planning.

I personally am of the mind set - FINR - Never Retire.

Learn skills, continue making an income for as long as you can. Know several people in their 70s to 90s (my dad will be 94 in a few weeks) and with may be a few exceptions, many of them are still using their skills and wisdom for active income production.

Active income production does not mean you have to show up at a 9-5 "job" or run a company - it can include active investments either in listed or private companies.

I should really talk to them and see if they can include HK and a few other datasets.

As others have said, I would guess the number would have to be lower. Not sure if the performance of the global stock market (assuming that's what a HK investor would invest in, possibly overweighted to HSI?) would outstrip HK inflation by a big enough distance over the long run.

This is a fascinating thread to follow as I have recently put my financials for retirement under a microscope. I suppose in many ways it's an easier chore in the U.S.
