Honestly I feel this is a question best for a search on Google.

Some people feel that they should just buy US government bonds or a super-low cost index fund that buys only US government bonds. Vanguard offers plenty of options in this regard, but so do all the other big index fund players.

I'd say find a bond fund that invests in the types of bonds you think are the best to invest in with the lowest possible expense ratio.
