Unless of course Alibaba gets mandated to be split up into 4 different companies.

On the topic of their overseas op. I had the opportunity to use their newly acquired Lazada. Did some shopping on 11/11 sale where I placed order at midnight to get discounts like taobao (yes i'm cheap). Next morning the app tracking shows the parcel is at the warehouse near my house and by 5pm it was at my door step. I'm freaking impressed!

As compared to Shopee, which is under SEA Ltd (NYSE:SE). Placed an order, no news or updates, 5 days later it arrived via some courier.

I think they are way advance in their online shopping operations. Taking their chinese model and replicating it in South east Asia. Shopee do try to replicate them, even their app store looks like taobao

Not sure if their HK ops is different, but Lazada in south-east Asia has lost a lot of its lustre precisely because of them becoming taobao SEA. Their app is horrendous - it has gotten so far that if you find a product in google, get redirected to their app, you have to wait and look at a banner for five seconds before you can close it, and then you're still on the landing page and have to click a link to the product you're actually looking for. Their distribution might be better, but I think this game gets decided in ID and VN much more than SG and HK

Which country was that? And was it recently - the Lazada acquition was in 2016...

Baba is cheap - but how can you value it when they get told to sink their profits into national priorities like semiconductors (Tsinghua group) and common prosperity...

Agreed TH as well, huge market in these 3 countries. and I think they are banking on logistics to win the market. Shopee sellers are still using the local couriers while Lazada is building their own fleet

I learnt about this from a friends Indonesian helper saying you can put your things on lazada to sell and they will deliver it to ID at reasonable/built in cost

Malaysia, just during the past 11/11 sale. I've used lazada since the previous owner. I can tell you their fulfillment service has improved leaps and bounds. Probably due to covid driving everyone jobless so there are tons of riders/delivery man.

Their eCommerce profits are just astronomical, i'm not afraid of break up etc. I see amazing potential value in their cloud if Amazon is a yardstick. My only concern like you said is their national duty, what will they be forced to swallow
