Opening an investment account with HKID

Is it possible to open an investment account in Hong Kong using solely your HKID (not a permanent resident), and not using your passport?

I need to setup a brokerage account, and I'm wondering if people without permanent ID can open accounts. Oh, and can someone recommend a good brokerage firm to use that has low fees and decent analysis features? Thanks!

Yes, no problem opening the account without being a permanent resident, but in that case you will generally need to show your passport as well as your HKID (since a non-permanent HKID card doesn't in itself prove anything about your status in Hong Kong (because it has no expiry date on it)).

Generally they want to make sure who you are under Know-Your-Client rules. Why do you want to avoid showing your passport anyway?
