Income tax, provisional tax........... Please help, I'm confused!

    Lucky you, I guess! It never worked that way when I was paying tax. Just to be clear though, are you actually paying the tax, or is your employer paying it on your behalf (maybe under some sort of tax equalisation contract)? I can see that IRD might time the payments differently if it's a company that's paying.

    Tax Advisor? That's the one thing I was glad to walk away from in HK. The ability to do one's own personal taxes in about 5 minutes a year is priceless.

    I guess Americans need to keep them though.

    I (unfortunately) pay my own taxes.

    Tax advisor: wouldn't mind doing it myself but it's my company's policy that the taxes for all expats globally are handled by Deloitte. That said, they saved me quite a bit of money by proposing the time-apportionment which I would never have figured out myself.

    Quite good is an understatement... it more or less halved my effective tax rate.
