    Joint taxes for non-working spouse?

My spouse is not working therefore does not need to file for income taxes. Can I opt for a joint filing/married couple option when I file for my income tax?

For Joint Assessment both must have income assessable to Hong Kong Salaries Tax. As your spouse hasn't had any such income, you claim the Married Person's Allowance instead.

does that mean spouse still has to file an individual return at $0 earned?

If they haven't been working they won't have an IR56B from their employer, will they?

No, but that doesnt necessarily mean they do not have to file, does it? For example, in the US, regardless of income earned you still need to file every year. And please for the love of all things geo...do not begin with the "this is not US" rants

No spouse income = NO joint filing/married couple option

There's a box on the tax return form to say your spouse didn't earn anything. You just tick that box and their tax allowance is yours.

But how a married couple who have been working and earning taxable income in HK can file a joint assessment? What is the process?

But we don't have income tax here.
