What ideas can people share on legitimate tax deductions?
There are not many - education expenses for education relevant to the job and charitable donations are the only two I can find for me. HK tax is nice and simple, not necessary to claim loads of deductions.
Laptops, phones for work etc?
Airfares if work sends you overseas?
TB: Surely the BYOD thing is related to the employees being a little bit more picky about their devices?
Or have employers given up providing essential laptops / desktops and blackberry phones and are insisting that employees bring their own devices?
Let's not complain about HK salary tax. It's pretty damn good!

Your choice. The company paid the expense, you chose to pay for something out-of-pocket.
There used to be a loophole whereby you could claim for personal expenses but that was closed before laptops were portable and when mobile phones were the size of a house brick.

Now you're creating hypothetical situations which clearly go beyond common sense / gray areas.
Why in gods name would IRD consider an upgrade essential to you earning a living? The class you travel in is strictly an issue between you and your employer. You accepted the economy ticket from them -- end of story.
